(1923–),New York weekly “news-magazine” founded by Briton Hadden and Henry Robinson Luce to present a concise and comprehensive summary of current news related to its larger background, grouped in various general and specialized departments that are changed or augmented from time to time. Each issue includes one long article treating the subject that is featured on its pictorial cover, and annually, with fanfare, the year's first issue presents a cover and long story on the “Man of the Year.” The journal maintains correspondents throughout the world and has a staff of research workers, in addition to subscribing to news services and depending upon other periodicals. It is written in an impersonal though lively style that was at one time marked by a rather flip manner and a prose noted for concentrated language and arch use of neologisms, but it has outgrown most of these mannerisms.
