Andrew of Crete,
poet, ecclesiastical orator, and saint; born Damascus ca.660, died Lesbos 4 July 740. Tonsured at an early age at the monastery of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Andrew became a notary of the Great Basilica there.
