The village in Galilee which was the home of the BVM and St *Joseph, and where Christ was brought up and lived till the beginning of His ministry. It lies on a hill overlooking the valley of Esdraelon. It is not mentioned outside the NT. Until recently the town was a popular place of pilgrimage, many of its shrines having been rebuilt after their destruction by Muslims in the Middle Ages. Among its more important sanctuaries are the ‘Church of the Annunciation’, believed to be erected over the house of Mary, the ‘Church of the Nutrition’ (now the Church of St Joseph), on the traditional site of that of St Joseph, and the beautiful ‘St Mary's Well’. ... ...
