A late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century cultural tendency to dispense with ideologies and other types of grand narrative that hitherto lent thematic and formal coherence to a work of art. Features of Post-modernism in literature include disorientation, the mixing of genres, styles, and discourses, the return to pre-modern and medieval conventions, the uncoupling of authorship and originality, and the prevalence of the jargon and imagery of the mass media and consumerism.
