An air-source *heat pump (ASHP) that uses heat rather than electricity to drive it. In a water and lithium bromide cooler, for example, water at low pressure in an evaporator evaporates and extracts heat from the building. The water vapour is absorbed in a lithium bromide solution, which is pumped to a vessel where it is heated and the water evaporated off. The water vapour is condensed, transferring its heat to the surrounding air, and its pressure is reduced and returned to the evaporator. An absorption cooler’s coefficient of performance is about five times less than a vapour compression system, but its energy input is heat, which can be freely available (e.g. waste heat or solar energy). ... ...
