Oldenburg, Claes (1929–2022). Sculptor, printmaker, and draftsman
A pioneering creator of *happenings, in the early 1960s he contributed to *pop art with witty soft sculptures of common objects, such as typewriters and hamburgers. From the mid-1970s, he specialized in monuments for public places. These, too, generally invoked the iconography of everyday life, but their gigantic size frees their subjects from normal associations, producing effects ranging from whimsy to menace. Many drawings for unrealized projects present fantastic visions that amplify the surrealist underpinnings of his sculpture.
