A leading twentieth-century sculptor, she is best known for massive and theatrical wall-size pieces, usually comprising modular, boxlike units that enclose small abstract compositions. Appearing first in the late 1950s, these works feature allusive found objects and fragments that appear to derive from architecture or furniture. Poetic and mysterious, they reveal the potential grandeur of commonplace objects.
