A leading *abstract expressionist, he produced elegant yet powerful works. As the most articulate of the major abstract expressionists, he often was regarded as the movement’s spokesman. In his youth, he acquired a rich intellectual foundation, forming the basis of lifelong interests in literature, aesthetic theory, and psychology. A vigorous participant in the formative milieu of abstract expressionism, he served as an important conduit to European culture.
