Lichtenstein, Roy (1923–97). Painter, printmaker, and sculptor
A central figure in *pop art, he came to public attention in the early 1960s with provocative paintings ostensibly replicating comic-strip images. He later applied this personal style of pure colors and flat, clear shapes (generally bounded by black lines) to disparate subjects, including interiors, landscapes, architectural elevations, confounding representations of mirrors, and well-known old master and modern paintings. Although generally whimsical, often amusing, and occasionally hilarious in tone, his work serves the larger purposes of examining the conventions of representation, the mechanisms of vision, and the psychology of form.... ...
