In majestic, highly detailed, and dramatic photographs of the American West, Adams created an exalted reality. The splendor of his images resonates with the long-held myth that the landscape, in its power, beauty, and sublimity, symbolizes the nation’s greatness. An ardent conservationist, he remained long associated with the Sierra Club and its message of wilderness preservation. Although much of his work records vast spaces, he also sensitively rendered nature’s intimate corners and sometimes produced close-ups of vegetation or geological features.
