A form of art, predominately painting, characterized by large scale, nonrepresentational and nongeometric form, painterly technique, and asymmetrical, relational composition. Originating in New York during the 1940s, it soon became recognized as the leading form of advanced art. Although rooted in earlier European abstraction and surrealism, it represents the first American style to set an international standard of originality and accomplishment.
