Principally a painter of portraits and *genre scenes, Eakins employed old master techniques to depict his modern world. Devoted to science as a tool of understanding, he nevertheless remained at heart a romantic, committed to beauty and the perplexities of human existence. In striving to understand the structure of the reality he depicted, Eakins methodically pursued studies in perspective and human anatomy.
