The first native-born sculptor of note, he remained primarily a woodcarver but also modeled terra cottas. Rising from artisanal beginnings, eventually he forged a fresh and ambitious original synthesis of the woodcarver’s craft with sophisticated imported traditions. A lifelong Philadelphian, he established that city’s preeminence in sculpture in the first decades of the nineteenth century.
