born in Constantine, Algeria. In 1990, he commenced his studies at the École des Beaux Arts, Algiers but, following the assassination in 1994 by terrorists of the school’s director and his son, he moved to France to study at the École des Beaux Arts in Lyons. Following a short spell in New York, which he found ‘unlivable’ because of the atmosphere for people of Arabic descent after 9/11, he has lived and worked in Paris and Berlin. His nomadic existence is summed up by an early piece, a neon ‘Exit’ sign spelt as ‘Exil’ which he made in 1996 when he was unable to return home for his sister’s wedding. At the 2007 Venice Biennale, this replaced all the ‘Exit’ signs.... ...
