Born into a poor peasant family Machel never completed his secondary education. In 1963 he joined the main anti-Portuguese nationalist movement, the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) and rapidly became one of its main guerrilla commanders after receiving military training in Algeria.
