Burnout is characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion, and often occurs due to chronic stress, a unidimensional athletic identity (because specialization in one sport often limits athletes’ ability to create social relationships outside of their sport), or a lack of control in the sport environment. Personality characteristics, such as perfectionism, as well as psychosocial factors (e.g., excessive pressure from others) can lead to the development of burnout. ...
