Title IX was passed by the US Government in 1972 for the purpose of creating equality for women and men in federally funded colleges and universities. Its application to intercollegiate athletics has had and continues to have a dramatic effect in creating opportunity for women by increasing the number of sports available to women and increasing the number of women who play intercollegiate sports.
