Surfing
Surfing originated in Polynesia roughly a thousand years ago. It declined under the influence of Western Christian missionaries and was revived in the early 1900s; formal competition soon followed. The sport saw an explosion of popularity during the 1960s. Surfing has branched into several subdisciplines, including bodysurfing, big wave riding (with its rival subcategories, tow-in and traditional paddle-in), and standup paddling (SUP).
