Sports tourism can be classified according to multiple determinants: active/passive, single sport / multiple sport, or participatory/independent. Statistics show that one fourth of international tourists choose sport as the main reason for traveling. If “accidental” sport participation is included, up to 80 percent of all tourists participate in sports. Popular “passive” sporting destinations such as the Tour de France or the Olympics bring awareness to people in other parts of the world.
