Cross-country, or Nordic, skiing is a winter recreational activity as well as a competitive sport. Changes in equipment and technique in the twentieth century transformed cross-country skiing from a form of transportation and leisure activity into a modern sport and popular winter activity. Its appeal for recreational skiers is the relatively low cost (the technology doesn’t change much, so used equipment is easy to come by), the aerobic workout it provides, and the wide availability of places to ski away from crowds and without the need to purchase a lift ticket.
