The Paralympic Movement has made enormous progress since its beginnings in the 1940s under the leadership of Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who used physical activity and sport to help wounded soldiers. Persons with different kinds of disabilities compete in international sport events: the Summer Paralympic Games (since 1960) and the Winter Paralympic Games (since 1976). The umbrella organization is called the “International Paralympic Committee (IPC),” which cooperates closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). ...
