The Winter Olympics are the premier multi-sport festival for winter sports. They are staged every four years, two years after each Summer Olympics; they were held in the same year as the Summer Games until 1992. A Winter Paralympics was added in 2002. Although the games include sports popular in cold-weather climates, they now draw over 2,500 athletes from over eighty nations spanning various climates. Many of the sports can be adversely affected by fickle weather conditions; the choice of Sochi, Russia—one of Russia’s warmest cities—for the 2014 Games has thus been questioned by many around the globe. ...
