Numerous movies have been made about sports, from The Natural and Bend It Like Beckham to The Bad News Bears and The Boxer. The drama associated with sports and the strange things that often occur in games make them interesting subject matter for filmmakers. Ascribing a multitude of values to sports also has encouraged their use in exploring larger issues. Films generally celebrated the values sports taught, until the 1970s, when filmmakers began exploring the darker side of the sporting experience. Since the mid-1980s, while the dark side is still present, the trend has returned to movies that glorify the importance of sports. ...
