Kitesurfing—a water sport that combines elements of skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, surfing, windsurfing, and paragliding—has its origins in China, where kites originated, and in Indonesia and Polynesia, where fishermen used kite-powered canoes for fishing and transportation. Although kitesurfing is possible wherever conditions are right, the coast of Namibia has seen most of the world’s speed records due to consistently high winds caused by the meeting of hot land and cold water.
