A biennial “Test” cricket series played between England and Australia, the Ashes began in 1882 after Australia’s first victory on English soil. A mock obituary in the English press noted that “English cricket had died and that its body would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” The English media dubbed the subsequent English tour to Australia as “the quest to regain the Ashes.” ...
