After the invention of powered flight in the early 1900s, the long-term value of aviation lay in its potential for travel over vast distances. In the first half of the twentieth century, intrepid pilots and their backers set out to prove that powered flight could take place between continents and around the globe. Early flying events offering prizes, fame, and fortune lacked the credibility as sporting contests that later events would have, as the race rules were ad hoc, competition was not conducted under the auspices of a governing body, and the events were staged as publicity stunts. ...
