Family names of German origin constitute a very substantial share of American surnames. In addition to the major group comprising the names of immigrants from Germany, German names were also brought to North America and specifically to the United States by immigrants from Switzerland, Austria, Alsace (in present-day France), and from German-language enclaves like Transylvania (in present-day Romania), as well as from the Ukraine and from the area of the so-called Volga Germans, to name just a few. In addition, mention must be made of English names, which, already changed, derive from those of originally German emigrants to England.... ...
