There are more than four million Filipinos in the United States based on the 2018 American Community Survey data released by the US Census Bureau. The Filipino diaspora in the US began with the transpacific voyage of Filipinos from the Philippine islands to the Americas during the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade. The galleon trade started in the mid-1500s and lasted until the early 1800s. Around this time, a group of Filipinos, later called the “Manilamen”, settled in southern Louisiana near Barataria Bay.
