The heyday of Polish surname formation was the 14th century, though some surnames are recorded before that, especially among the urban upper classes, while others—especially among the peasantry—did not come into existence until much later. Unsurprisingly, the great majority of Polish surnames derive from Polish words and personal (or given) names (vernacular as well as biblical), in many cases exhibiting variations in spelling and pronunciation due to dialect differences.
