Nonverbal signals or verbal signs constituting public displays of a personal bond between two individuals. Most obviously, these can take the form of close proximity and orientation, sustained body-contact, shared facial expressions, postures, gestures, and/or verbal exchanges. They can reflect relationships ranging from casual to very intimate. The term was coined by Desmond Morris in 1977. See also haptics; postural echo; proxemics.
