Rubin–Ford effect

Quick Reference

An apparent anisotropy in the expansion of the Universe on a scale of around 100 million l.y., as revealed by a study of the motions of a sample of spiral galaxies by the American astronomers Vera Cooper Rubin (1928– ) and William Kent Ford, Jr (1931– ). The reason that there is not a purely isotropic Hubble flow is because the Universe is not homogeneous on these scales.
