Phoenix Park murders

Quick Reference

The assassination in Phoenix Park, Dublin, of the British Chief Secretary for Ireland, Lord Frederick Cavendish, and his Under-Secretary, T. H. Burke, by the “Invincibles”, a terrorist splinter group of the Fenians. In the subsequent climate of revulsion against terrorism, Parnell was able to gain ascendancy over the Irish National League and strengthen the moderate Home Rule Party.
