La Matière de Bretagne
The term used by Jean Bodel (late 12th–early 13th cent.) in a French verse romance about Charlemagne to describe the subject‐matter of the romances concerned with the Arthurian legends, as distinct from those concerned with classical stories (the matter of Rome), or with Charlemagne and his circle (the matter of France). The ‘matter of Britain’ was a source of inspiration in the 20th cent. for D. Jones and C. Williams.
