Overview

loop prominence

Quick Reference

A very bright active prominence in the form of a loop above the site of a very large flare, seen on the Sun's limb in Hα light. A series of loop prominences usually occurs, progressively larger loops forming above one another. The smaller, earlier ones eventually fade from sight after an hour or so. The maximum height attained is 100 000 km, and a complete loop prominence system may last more than a day. X-ray loops, observed simultaneously on occasion, are located on the outer edge of Hα loops, giving the impression that loop prominences somehow condense out of the hot coronal material.
