US dancer and writer. She studied at the Juilliard School and School of American Ballet and made her debut with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo aged 12. She later danced with Metropolitan Ballet (1951–4) and with New York City Ballet (1954–62). She also performed in films and on Broadway. During the 1960s she was film curator of the Lincoln Center Dance Collection and from 1963 to 1980 worked as television and radio producer, writing and co-producing the Dance in America series (1971–4). She has written several books, including Martha Graham: Evolution of her Dance Theory and Training (1991) and Sleeping Beauty: The Ballet (1994).
