G. E. Fussell

Quick Reference

George Fussell was a prolific writer on †agricultural history, who published over twenty books and more than 600 articles from 1922 right up to his centenary year. He developed his literary interests as a civil servant in what became the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Without any formal academic training, he became an authority on agricultural history at a time when little had been written on the subject. He edited the farm accounts of Robert Loder in 1936, but most of his vast output was concerned with contemporary printed sources. His pioneering works included The English Rural Labourer (1949), The English Countryman (1953) and The English Countrywoman (1955), both with his wife, K. R. Fussell, and The English Dairy Farmer, 1500–1900 (1966). He was one of the founder members of the British Agricultural History Society.
