Utrecht Psalter

The psalter preserved in the university library of Utrecht (ms. script. eccl. 484) was made in c.830 in the scriptorium of Hautvillers abbey, near Épernay, under the aegis of Archbishop Ebbo. The text of each psalm is preceded by a pen drawing. Separate scenes are grouped together in a mountain landscape, under the image of the Saviour. It is a literal illustration of the text, each scene corresponding to an expression of the psalmist. The illustration may be inspired by an early Christian model (doubtless 5th-c.). It was often copied subsequently, especially in England.
