independent variable n. 

In experimental design, a variable that is varied by the experimenter independently of the extraneous variables in order to examine its effects on the dependent variable. In multiple regression, it is a variable that has a potential effect on the dependent variable. Also called an experimental variable. See also intervening variable. IV abbrev.
