Sitka, Alaska/USA

Novo Arkhangelsk

A fort was built here in 1799 by Alexander Baranov (1746–1819), the first Russian governor of Alaska. This was destroyed by the Tlingit in 1802. Two years later the construction of a city, Novo Arkhangelsk ‘New Archangel’, was begun. In 1867 Alaska was sold to the USA and the city became known as Sitka from the Tlingit Shee At'iká ‘People on the Edge of Shee’, Shee being the Tlingit name for Baranof Island and Sitka being located on its western coast.
