gun

Tubular weapon firing a projectile by force of explosion. The term is now restricted to pieces with a high muzzle velocity and, usually, a flat trajectory. Pistols, rifles, machine guns and cannon are usually described as guns, whereas artillery devices such as mortars, which fire slow shot at high angles, are not.
