Bodley, Sir Thomas

The Oxford Companion to the Book

Bodley, Sir Thomas (1545–1613) English book collector.

Bodley was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, and, after academic and diplomatic careers, devoted the last fifteen years of his life to the foundation of the *Bodleian Library in Oxford, which opened in November 1602 with a collection of about 2,000 volumes. Bodley continued to enlarge the collection until his death, with the assistance of his first librarian and cataloguer, Thomas *James (1572/3–1629).
