I. C. B. Dear served in the Royal Marines from 1953 to 1957 and saw active service in Cyprus. He subsequently worked in book publishing for 16 years before becoming a full-time writer in 1979. His books on military subjects include Ten Commando, 1942–1945 (1987), Sabotage and Subversion (1999), and Escape and Evasion (2000).

M. R. D. FOOT, CBE, is an historian and former wartime intelligence officer. He was Professor of Modern History at Manchester (1967–73) and editor of the first four volumes of the Gladstone Diaries. His other works include SOE in France (1968), Resistance (1976), SOE: An Outline History (4th edn., 1999), and SOE in the Low Countries (2001).
