About the Encyclopedia

The editorial board and Oxford University Press have developed two encyclopedias of African American history and culture. The purpose of the two sets is to provide a comprehensive view of the wealth of information about and scholarship on African Americans from 1619 to the present in what began as a collection of European colonies, but which became the United States of America.
