The Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names

John Everett-Heath

Och’amch’ire, Georgia Ala Gunda, Oshimshir

The Genoese established Ala Gunda, a trading post, here in the 14th century but, following decades of Turkish occupation, this fell into decay and box woods grew up around it. Shamshir is the Turkish for ‘box tree’ or ‘box grove’ and the Black Sea port which was developed later was named Oshimshir. In due course this evolved into the present name.
