Introducing... Advanced Search

Oxford Reference Online allows you to perform advanced searches when you are seeking very specific information on a particular topic. The Advanced Search option is available from every page, so it's always just one click away. On the following page we've shown a search for King, in Literature, with the People filter selected.

With Advanced Search, you can refine your search in the following ways:

  • Search the full text of the database, or just entry headings
  • Search for people or dates
  • Select Subjects to search
With Advanced Search you can even choose your method of searching: Extended, Boolean, or Spellcheck.

  • Use Extended search to find other forms of a word, such as plurals, other tenses of verbs, or synonyms. For example, the search term genetics might find results including gene, genetic engineering, genetics, genetically, and the Human Genome Project.
  • Try Boolean searching to construct powerful searches and include and exclude terms. Do you want to know the term for rabbit hair? Just type in hair OR wool AND rabbit and you'll find the definition of angora.
  • If you use Spellcheck search, even if you're not sure of the exact spelling, you won't be left without results because words containing a similar sequence of letters are returned as results.
