The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment

The August update on Oxford Reference Library adds the first edition of The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment, now available through institutional title-by-title perpetual access.

The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment is the first reference work on this key subject in early American history. With substantial and original essays on key American Enlightenment figures, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Jonathan Edwards and many others, it provides a comprehensive account to complement the intense scholarly activity that has recently centered on the European Enlightenment. This wide-ranging collection also includes topical essays, and entries on dozens of often-overlooked secondary figures.

The Encyclopedia contains 500 entries across two volumes.

"Text Query Builder" Goes Live

In mid-August, a new functionality enhancement was made to the Oxford Reference platform. The goals of this update were:

  • To replace the advanced search option for a more effective option for finding relevant results in searches
  • To present the useful advanced search controls on the results page

This new search control box (or "text query builder,") available on search and browse pages, allows for a simple, streamlined search experience. Based on current best practices in user interface design  this new feature will save researchers time by offering search modifications right on the search and browse pages, rather than having to go through a separate Advanced Search page. It allows users to easily modify and update their search or browse results, whether they are looking to add search terms or modify their search based on date range.

Additional Oxford resources that now feature the new query builder include:

  • Oxford Research Encyclopedias
  • Oxford Handbooks Online
  • Oxford Law Platform
  • AMA Manual of Style
  • Oxford First Source
  • Oxford Medicine Online
  • Very Short Introductions
  • Oxford Clinical Psychology
