born in Wigan. He studied at *St Martin's School of Art and Camberwell School of Art, London, and made his reputation with colourful sculptures of hedges and garden walls. The imagery was taken from popular gardening magazines and ‘prescriptions for the nouveau [sic] bourgeoisie’ published in the 19th century on how to organize house and garden.
